Passing of Brother Bittner

It is with regret and deep sadness that we report the passing of Frostburg Fire Department Brother Harold Bittner. Bitty joined the FFD on December 8, 1970 serving with pride for 45 years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Donna and the entire Bittner family.

The viewing will be Tuesday, February 3rd from 4:00 - 7:00pm at Durst Funeral Home on Frost Avenue in Frostburg. The FFD will perform our service at 6:45pm.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00am. A luncheon at the Frostburg Moose will follow.

Student suffers severe Burns in apartment fire

Frostburg-uppercase a Frostburg State University student remained hospitalized in serious condition today with Burns he suffered during an apartment fire early Friday. Two other people escaped without injury.

David Williams Pear Jr., 21, of Silver Spring, was found in the hallway of the burning apartment building at 30 Stoyer Street at about 3:30am by Frostburg firefighters. He had apparently collapsed while trying to escape, said Deputy Chief State Fire Marshall Bob Thomas. Pair was being treated in Frostburg’s intensive care unit in serious condition, said a hospital spokeswoman. Pair was then flown to the Francis Scott Key burned center in Baltimore later in the

EIGHT BUSINESS PLACES GUTTED OR DAMAGED IN FROSTBURG BLAZE; RESIDENTS EVACUATED

Main Street Bakery, Shoe, Clothing Stores Destroyed

A fire which raged for nearly four hours before being brought under control, destroyed three Frostburg Main Street business places, damaged another and caused smoke or water damage in four others yesterday. Residents residing above the properties were evacuated and none was injured.

A reprint from the Mining Journal - Saturday, January 7, 1893

FIRE

A portion of Mrs. Amanda Folk’s house, Maple street, was burned Wednesday night about 11½ o’clock owing to the distance from the fire department’s headquarters some delay in sounding the alarm was occasioned. Meanwhile the fir gained headway. It was a bad, cold night, but the laddies got there in force with all their apparatus.

The first blast from the nozzle showed that the new water system was master of the situation and soon the fire was completely extinguished. The fire almost instantly collapsed when the strong head of the new water system fell upon it. The hydrant is one of the new ones too, and located just right. Frostburg K of C gutted

ONE INJURED, SMOKE FELLS TWO OTHERS
Fire gutted the Frostburg Knights of Columbus building, 117 East Main St., yesterday about 9:30PM.

Five fire companies and the LaVale Volunteer Rescue Squad truck responded to the alarm turned in by Enoch Price, a fireman, who was passing by the building in his car and noticed smoke. He summoned the Frostburg volunteer fire company

Firemen were at a dinner in the police station and arrived at the scene within minutes but it was reported the fire already had blazed into the ceiling of the two-story, brick building, which was gutted.
