Passing of FFD Brother, Robert L. Connor

It is with regret and deep sadness that we report the sudden death of Frostburg Fire Department Brother Robert L. (Bob) Connor.

Bob joined the FFD (along w/ his brother, Dick) on February 8, 1966 serving with pride for 47 years.  He held just about every rank including Assistant Chief and served as the Department's President from 1977 through 1979.  Bob was awarded the Firefighter of the Year award in 1978 and he also served as the Police-Fire Commissioner for the City of Frostburg.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Linda and their entire family.

Family and friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Avenue, Frostburg on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 from 7 to 9 pm; and Friday, November 29, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The Elks Lodge 470 will hold a

On This Day In Frostburg/FFD History

While researching vintage photographs of tornado damage in Frostburg, MD, Bob Lemmert came across the following information on the NOAA website:

November 23, 1891 at about 1000 hours EST, a F2 tornado struck Frostburg. The damage path statistics are unknown. Deaths and injuries are also unknown. The tornado touched down in the Consol area near the present day armory. It followed Water Street (northward) before shifting east down main street near St. Michael's Catholic Church.  It moved through the heart of Frostburg and down to Depot Hill.  Buildings were destroyed, roofs lifted, chimneys downed and windows shattered.  A horse and wagon was blown 50 yards, a full rail car

On This Day In Frostburg/FFD History

November 20, 1936 – Frostburg's only four story building, the Frostburg Opera House (former Ravenscroft Opera House) at the corner of Main and Depot Streets (today housing Fat Boy's Pizza) is destroyed by an intense fire and burns to a shell.  Said to have been a spectacular fire, fed by grain stored in the basement and huge virgin white pine girders, melts the copper roof providing a fireworks-like display lasting most of the night.  Lemmert Brothers Garage and four homes are damaged by flying embers.  Estimated losses are $70,000 and the cause of the fire, though never proven, was thought to be arson.

This fire was just four days after the Wittig and Laporta block on Main Street was partially destroyed by fire.

BUSINESS BUILDINGS BURN AT FROSTBURG

Properties Were Owned By George H. Wittig Estate and Mrs. LaPorta

Frostburg November 17 – Three large frame buildings, housing six places of business and three families, were almost completely destroyed late last night by a fire with a loss estimated at approximately $40,000.  Two of the buildings were owned by the George H. Wittig estate and the other was the property of Mrs. Anthony LaPorta. The fire, which originated in the basement of the John D. Rees meat market, in one of the main business sections of the city, spread rapidly in for a while it was feared that the entire block would be wiped out. Dale joined this great organization on November 13, 2007 (2002 with 5 years of credited service transferred from Solomon's VFD & Rescue Squad) and throughout the years, provided dedicated service and leadership as both an administrative and fire line officer. He currently serves as a Trustee and Assistant Chief.

FFD’s Annual Fund Drive

It’s that time of the year again; our annual fund drive.

Most citizens in our first due area will be receiving this in the mail.  Please keep in mind that no amount is too small to donate.

We are celebrating our 135th year as a 100% VOLUNTEER fire department and with that, comes many financial responsibilities.
