Drill Night Focusing on Rapid Intervention Team Techniques

During Tuesday's department training, FFD members worked with Company 15 (Mount Savage) focusing on Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) techniques. PSA: Discolored Water Following Tuesday’s Fire

City of Frostburg-Due to the extreme draws of water from the fire hydrants in the business district, City water customers may experience discolored water for the next 24 hours, however, the water remains safe to drink.
Peak flows at times today were in excess of 5 million gallons per day, whereas average draws are typically 1 million gallons per day.
Our thoughts are with the families and businesses displaced by the fire.

Seven Buildings Totaling Loss Of $150,000 Destroyed – Stiff Gale Balks Firemen Who Fought For Four Hours – Frostburg Department Handicapped, New Auto engine of Cumberland And Coney Firefighters Save Town From Devastation.
FROSTBURG, Dec. 14 – A fire, doing an estimated damage of $150,000, broke out this morning about 5 o’clock from the Shea building, this place, and before it was extinguished burned seven buildings to the ground. While researching vintage photographs of tornado damage in Frostburg, MD, Bob Lemmert came across the following information on the NOAA website:
November 23, 1891 at about 1000 hours EST, a F2 tornado struck Frostburg. The damage path statistics are unknown. Deaths and injuries are also unknown. The tornado touched down in the Consol area near the present day armory. It followed Water Street (northward) before shifting east down Main street near St. Michael's Catholic Church. It moved through the heart of Frostburg and down to Depot Hill. Buildings were destroyed, roofs lifted, chimneys downed and windows shattered. A horse and wagon was blown 50 yards,

Landmark Seventy Years Old Is Destroyed
The second fire in the business section this week completely destroyed the old Frostburg Opera House at the corner of Main and Depot Streets early this morning. The alarm was sent in about 2 a.m. by Russell Carter of Grahamtown and by 2:30 the building was a mass of flames.
Said to have been a spectacular fire, fed by grain stored in the basement and huge virgin white pine girders, melted the copper roof providing a fireworks-like display lasting most of the night. A four-story brick structure, it was owned by Mrs. Joseph H. Hitchens and for years housed the largest motion picture theater in the city. Recently, it had been

BUSINESS BUILDINGS BURN AT FROSTBURG
Properties Were Owned By George H. Wittig Estate and Mrs. LaPortaFrostburg November 17 – Three large frame buildings, housing six places of business and three families, were almost completely destroyed late last night by a fire with a loss estimated at approximately $40,000. Two of the buildings were owned by the George H. Wittig estate and the other was the property of Mrs. Anthony LaPorta.

Crews practiced Aerial Device Operations during training on Tuesday evening. The goal was to stack a road cone suspended from the tip onto a cone placed about 100' from the truck as smoothly as possible. This drill teaches the precision required to place the aerial ladder quickly and safely during fireground operations.

FFD Attends Autumn Glory Festival

Engine 164 and the recently restored Hose Reel made an appearance at last night's Autumn Glory Parade in Oakland, MD. The crew spent the entire day getting both pieces shined up and ready, and their efforts paid off, bringing home a trophy for "Best Appearing Antique Apparatus - 25 Years or Older", and looking pretty sharp while doing it.E164, our 1988 Seagrave, has attended countless Autumn Glory Festivals over the years, but sadly, this will likely be the last time she will see the parade as an in-service pumper. E164 is slated to be replaced by a 2019 Pierce Enforcer next summer!
This is the first, but certainly not the last, appearance of the Frostburg Fire Department's original Hose Reel after being restored in 2015.

It is finally happening after four years of research and design and your financial support, we are replacing our 1988 Pumper with a new, upgraded Engine; but we’re not there yet. Please continue to support the new engine fund with your tax-deductible donation, which helps us protect life, property and the environment in your community!The old unit served us well for 30 years, but maintenance has become too costly to serve the community any longer. This new unit will help us continue the high level of service you have come to expect from your FFD volunteers. The new engine is a 2019 Pierce Enforcer, that seats up to eight emergency responders.
The cost of this unit is about $590,000! In addition to apparatus payments, your contribution helps us with essential tools and appliances
