Hose Reel Rededication

In May of 2013, Frosburg native and good friend of the FFD, Bob Lemmert contacted our archives POC and informed him that a friend of his was in possession of one of the first pieces of firefighting equipment the FFD ever owned. A “Hand-Drawn” hose reel (circa 1880). One of seven reels housed in one of the four fire houses located throughout the town, was found in pieces in a barn in Salisbury, PA. After more than two years of painstaking restoration efforts, the owner and his family are donating it back to the FFD.

Additionally, a 1000 lb brass bell (circa 1887) which was removed from Station 1’s bell tower and sent back to the original bell foundry in Baltimore, has been returned fully refurbished.

AREA MOBILE HOME GUTTED BY FLAMES

Fire destroyed the mobile home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Carey of Finzel yesterday. Mrs. Carey, who is in her 50’s was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital for treatment following the blaze.

The fire broke out at approximately 2:15 p.m. Units from Eastern Garrett County Volunteer Fire Company and Frostburg Fire Department were at the scene nearly three hours before the blaze was extinguished. Fred Arnold, Chief of Eastern Garrett, said when firemen arrived at the scene the trailer was engulfed in flames. Frostburg was then summoned for mutual aid.

Length of Service Anniversary

Please help us congratulate JB Hovatter on his "Length of Service" anniversary.

Jay joined this great organization this date in 1989 and throughout the years, provided dedicated service and leadership as both a Line and Administrative officer. He has been the Fire Prevention Chairman for 15+ years, which is a year-round responsibility to include FSU campus and school visits, annual fishing rodeo and numerous other safety and fire prevention events.

Jay is also an instructor with the Maryland Fire Rescue Institute (MFRI). All this while being employed by the Anne Arundel County Fire Department (AACoFD) as a Lieutenant.

Over the years, Jay has truly performed tens of thousands of man hours of training and service in an effort to continue the rich traditions of the FFD.
