The Officers and Members of the Frostburg Fire Department (FFD) take great pleasure in announcing that at last year’s Maryland State Firemen’s Association (MSFA) 121st annual convention, FFD Life Member, Emory D. Lancaster was recognized by his peers as being nominated for the Marberry F. Gates Award.Emory joined the FFD on October 22, 1957 and has faithfully served the Department, City and surrounding communities continuously for more than 56 years. He is the oldest surviving member of the Department and has served more years than any other member.During his volunteer fire service career he attended numerous fire training courses offered through the Maryland Fire Rescue Institute (MFRI) and served as a FFD Fire Captain, Assistant Chief and Trustee. Emory also served on numerous committees during his 56 year career. He was certified to drive all of the Department’s fire apparatus and was given the distinct Fireman of the Year award in 2006.Emory is a charter member of the Frostburg Area Ambulance Service (FAAS) and was one of the first EMT’s to serve that organization. He also is a charter member of the Allegany County Fire Police Association and served as a Volunteer Fire Police Officer for many years. In the 1960’s Mr. Lancaster heard the sound of screaming coming from a neighbor’s yard. As he went outside to investigate, he saw that a young child was on fire. He ran across the street, jumped over a hedge, a fence, and through a neighbor’s yard to rescue this little boy. Upon arriving he put out the flames and cut the little boy’s clothes off. If it weren’t for the heroic actions of this firefighter, the child would have suffered major injuries or may have died. For his actions, Emory was awarded the FFD’s “Life Save” ribbon. At last year’s convention, Emory was also awarded the Governor’s Citation from the State of Maryland recognizing his 56 years dedicated of service.Together with his two sons and grandson, the Lancaster family proudly boasts 134 years of volunteer fire service to MD fire departments. Pictured with Emory receiving his awards are sons Russell (Deale Fire Department, Anne Arundel Co.) and Dayne (Frostburg Fire Department).Thank you Emory! We appreciate ALL that you do.OUR DEEDS OUR REWARD
