Frostburg man dies in U.S. Route 40 crash. State police say weather affected driving conditions

FINZEL — A 42-year-old Frostburg man died Saturday night after a pickup truck in which he was a passenger struck a utility pole after the driver lost control while it was snowing and severe wind affected driving conditions, said Maryland State Police at McHenry.

William Volk died as a result of the accident, police reported.

The accident happened at about 11:03 p.m. Police said a 2008 Ford F-250 was being driven by Veryl Rafferty Jr. and was traveling east on U.S. Route 40 east of Finzel Road. Rafferty lost control on unfavorable road conditions and spun across the westbound lane. The vehicle struck a utility pole and overturned, police said.

The accident remains under investigation. Two other passengers in the vehicle, Edward McAteer, 36, and Philip Krauss, 42, both of Frostburg, refused medical treatment at the scene.

Responding to the accident in addition to state police were Frostburg and Eastern Garrett Fire Rescue, Frostburg Area Ambulance and the State Highway Administration.
