The Frostburg Fire Department will hold a seven-days’ fair and festival at Ravenscroft’s Opera House, beginning Feb. 18 for the benefit of Mr. J. N. Myers, who was last summer so seriously hurt at the fire brick works.

The bill announcing this festival says:
“In consideration of the accident which befell our brother fireman, we, the Frostburg Fire Department, deem this duty we owe him to lend a helping hand to a member who was ever ready to go to the front like a hero and risk his life in behalf of his fellow-citizens. We, therefore, ask the citizens of Frostburg and vicinity to aid us in this effort by way of contribution and patronage.”

NOTE: This happened eighteen months before the FFD was organized and six months prior to the fire which burned down half of the opposite side of Main Street and beyond. This is the same block that again burned to the ground in 1917. On both occasions, the fire jumped the alley between Durst (Today’s Book store) and Prichard’s and burned building's on both side.

Passing of FFD Brother Robert W. (Newt) Race

January 30, 2016 Events  No comments

It is with regret and deep sadness that we report the passing of Frostburg Fire Department (FFD) Brother Robert W. (Newt) Race.

Bob first joined the FFD in 1966. He left the area for a brief time and upon his return to Frostburg he rejoined the FFD in 1971 and served with pride for 45 years holding just about every rank including Fire Chief. Bob was twice awarded the Firefighter of the Year award in 1981 and again in 2007. He also served as the Chairman of the Apparatus Committee for 20 years

Bob was also a Sr. Instructor with the Maryland Fire Rescue Institute (MFRI) for more than 25 years. Newt taught many of the current members not only firefighting tactics but certified us to become apparatus operators.

He will truly be missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his
