From the Cumberland Evening Times, Page 9 – Monday, March 10, 1975

INN FIRE CONTAINED
Quick action by the Frostburg Volunteer Fire department personnel saved the “Billy Goat Inn” from destruction today. The in is located on Big Savage Mountain, about two miles west of Frostburg. The first floor tavern was burned but booster tanks on trucks saved the second floor. Clarysville and Shaft volunteers were called for assistance. The origin of the fire was not immediately determined. The second floor was vacant.

Length of Service Anniversary

Please help us congratulate Joe Brumage on his "Length of Service" anniversary. Joe joined this great organization on February 27, 1990. Combined with his previous fire service with the Fairmont, WV VFD, Joe has 33+ years of providing dedicated service.

Over the years, Joe has performed thousands of man hours of training and service in an effort to continue the rich traditions of the FFD, including serving eight years as the Department’s President. He is currently serving as the Financial Secretary, Fire-Police Officer and an Assistant Chief with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Fire-Police.

On behalf of the entire Department and the citizens of Frostburg and surrounding areas, THANK YOU and happy 28th!!

SEASON’S WORST STORM BLASTS TRI-STATE AREA
Stranded Travelers Aided By Firemen

The Frostburg and Grantsville fire departments played host to over a hundred travelers who were stopped in that town yesterday because U.S. Route 40 was blocked at Long Stretch.
The Frostburg Fire Hall was made comfortable for about 75 persons as the firemen treated them to food, color television, pool games and cards.

The Allegany County Chapter of the American Red Cross delivered 10 cots with sheets and blankets for their nights sojourn.
The motorists were from eight states according to William Davis, Frostburg’s Police & Fire Commissioner. He had 25 firemen on duty all day yesterday helping the guests

The New York Times, New York, NY February 15, 1904

TWO PERSONS KILLED AND THIRTY SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ACCIDENT AT FROSTBURG, MD.

Cumberland, Md., Feb. 14. -- A trolley car on the Frostburg and Westernport Railway ran away on the grade at Grant Street, Frostburg, early this morning, jumped the track on a curve, and ran into a telegraph pole.

Two passengers, JOHN GOUGH, aged nineteen, of Midland, and J. J. ROSS of Lonaconing, were killed. At least thirty others were seriously injured, while only a few of the eighty on board escaped cuts from broken glass.

Among those who may die are MISS NORA DAVIS, Grahamtown, who sustained concussion of the brain; RICHARD HAWKINS, Grahamtown, whose skull was fractured; JOHN McDONALD of Lord; DANIEL

Length of Service Anniversary

Please help us congratulate Mike Shirley on his "Length of Service" anniversary. He joined our great organization on this date in 1967!

Mike has provided dedicated service and leadership and over the years, and performed thousands of man hours of training and service in an effort to continue the rich traditions of the FFD. He held numerous positions on both the administrative and line side, including President (1980 - ’82) and Assistant Fire Chief. Mike was named Firefighter of the Year in 1980.

Mike now becomes the freshman member of an exclusive fraternity for those FFD with 50+ years that includes; Emory Lancaster (59), Jimmy Dale Williams (56), Sam McCulloh (55), Pete Davis (54) John Rowe and (50).

Please help us congratulate Joseph P. Hoffman on his "Length of Service" anniversary. Joe rejoined this great organization on February 14, 2012 after a brief break and with his previous FFD service, is celebrating seven years. Prior to joining the FFD, Joe also served with the Clarysville VFD.

Over the years, he has performed thousands of man hours of training, and dedicated service as both Line and Administrative Officer in an effort to continue the rich traditions of the FFD. Currently, Joe serves as an Assistant Fire Chief and a Trustee and was awarded the Fire Chief’s award in 2013.

On This Day In FFD History - February 14, 2014

ONE DEAD IN FROSTBURG COLLEGE RENTAL HOUSE FIRE

Lateef Gazal, a senior and Business Administration major from Bowie, MD, was killed in the fire. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi, the professional business fraternity; the Marketing Association, and the African Student Association.

MD Deputy State Fire Marshal, Oliver Alkire, said investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire in the two-story home at 144 Bowery Street. The building was a complete loss, with the second floor partially collapsing into the first floor, Alkire said. The victim’s remains were found on the first floor, but may have fallen from the upstairs level when the second-floor collapsed, he said.

The Chief and Assistant Chief of the Frostburg Fire Department are, respectively, Joseph Bone and Walter W. Wittig, and the former has just made known his selection of subsidiary officers, as follows:

Central Fire House – John D. Keller, Captain of chemical engine squad; George Lucus, Captain of 4-wheel reel squad; John T. Hart, Captain of hook and ladder squad and Thomas Griffith, Captain of the 2-wheel reel squad.

Bowery Street Hose House – Harry Fuller, Captain of reel squad and Theo. Sperry, Captain of hook and ladder squad.
