On This Day in FFD History

February 2nd happens to be a bad day for “This Day In FFD/Frostburg History.” This will be the first of three posts today and ironically, two of the fires involved the same building 130 years apart.

NOTE: This was 18 months before the FFD was organized and six months prior to the fire that burned down half of the opposite side of Main Street and beyond. This same block, again burned to the ground in December of 1917. (Today’s Gianni’s and FSU store and previously Prichard's & G.C Murphy’s)

As Flames Swept Mt. Savage Shops - A snow-laden gale whipped flames through the upper and lower shops of the C&P railroad early yesterday, causing $100,000 damage.

Shown are the wreckage of the upper shop and the roaring inferno inside the stone walls of the lower shop, which was built in 1868.

Also shown are the remains of Engine No. 24, just reconditioned. Operations will continue in buildings which were spared.

A reprint from the Cumberland Times-News Saturday, January 18, 1992
Student suffers severe burns in apartment fire

A Frostburg State University student remained hospitalized in serious condition today with burns he suffered during an apartment fire early Friday. Two other people escaped without injury.

David Williams Pear Jr., 21, of Silver Spring, was found in the hallway of the burning apartment building at 30 Stoyer Street at about 3:30am by Frostburg firefighters. He had apparently collapsed while trying to escape, said Deputy Chief State Fire Marshall Bob Thomas. Pear was being treated in Frostburg’s intensive care unit in serious condition, said a hospital spokeswoman. He was then flown to the Francis Scott Key burned center in

Armstrong Insurance Agency Donation

January 15, 2017 Events  No comments

The Armstrong Insurance Agency was recently awarded the 2016 Erie Insurance “Giving Network Agency” of the Year Award by the Silver Spring Branch for their outstanding community involvement.

This award enabled the agency to choose a deserving non-profit organization, to whom the Erie Insurance Group will make a $2500.00 donation. Instead of selecting one group, the Armstrong Insurance Agency matched the $2500.00 donation and selected two non-profits that proudly serve the greater Frostburg community. The Frostburg Fire Department (FFD) and the Frostburg Area Ambulance Service (FAAS) were both selected.
A dinner was held recently to honor these two organizations and to present the donations. The event was held at the newly-renovated 1885 Central Hose Reel House. An appropriate location
