BUSINESS BUILDINGS BURN AT FROSTBURG
Properties Were Owned By George H. Wittig Estate and Mrs. LaPorta

Frostburg November 17 – Three large frame buildings, housing six places of business and three families, were almost completely destroyed late last night by a fire with a loss estimated at approximately $40,000. Two of the buildings were owned by the George H. Wittig estate and the other was the property of Mrs. Anthony LaPorta.

The fire, which originated in the basement of the John D. Rees meat market, in one of the main business sections of the city, spread rapidly and for a while it was feared that the entire block would be wiped out. The alarm was sent in around 11 o’clock and by 11:30 the

FFD Training

Tuesday night's training drill focused on the use of Humat 4-way hydrant valves. The FFD will be transitioning to Humat valve operations by the end of the month.

We were joined by stations 17 (Shaft) and 18 (Midland) for the training session, which was led by Captain Chris Wainwright.

Length of Service Anniversary

Please help us congratulate Dale Bladen on his "Length of Service" anniversary. Dale joined this great organization on November 13, 2007 following many years of service with Solomon's Rescue Squad & VFD.

Throughout the years he has performed many man hours of training and service in an effort to continue the rich traditions of the FFD. Dale has provided dedicated service and leadership as both an administrative and fire line side as he currently serves as an Assistant Chief.

On behalf of the entire Department and the citizens of Frostburg and surrounding areas, thank you and happy 9th anniversary.

City Water Plan Aired At Meet

Frostburg – The Mayor and City Council held a meeting Tuesday with R. C. Regnier, consulting engineer for Whitman, Requardt and Associates. The new 16-inch main will run from the city reservoir on Big Savage Mountain to High Street, a distance of 4,317 feet, at an estimated cost of $60,000

Alex G. Close, city clerk, stated that the city has available $40,000 from the 1947 water improvement bond issue, and $25,000 from the 1950 water improvement bond issue.

The 1947 issue was for $60,000 of which $20,000 has already been spent and the 1950 issue was for $50,000 of which $25,000 has already been spent by the water department.

Frostburg Man Dies In Blaze After Alerting Wife, Who Escapes.
House Not Equipped With Smoke Alarms

A South water Street man died in a blaze early Tuesday at his home that did not have smoke detectors, an investigation by the MD State Fire Marshal’s Office determined. The man’s wife, however, was able to escape after he alerted her to the fire.
Melvin Harris, 82, was found just inside the front door of his 161 S. Water Street home following the 5:27 a.m. blaze. Harris apparently had been sleeping on the living room sofa when he was awakened by the blaze. He was able to yell for his wife, Helen, 82, to get out, and she escaped through a side door, the fire marshal’s office said.

Length of Service Anniversary

Please help us congratulate Jim Winfield on his "Length of Service" anniversary. Jim joined this great organization on November 10, 1970 and throughout the years, provided dedicated service and leadership as both an administrative and fire line officer, including Fire Chief.

Over the years, he performed many man hours of training and service in an effort to continue the rich traditions of the FFD. Jim also was a member with the Clarysville FD prior to joining the FFD.

Cresaptown Apartment Fire

Investigators: Resident set apartment fire

BEL AIR — A Bel Air woman has been charged with sparking a Saturday night fire that displaced three people and caused about $75,000 damage to Bel Air Apartments.

Jennifer J. Shoap, 45, was charged with first- and second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property over $1,000 and two counts of reckless endangerment, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. She was being held without bond Sunday night at the Allegany County Detention Center.

Fire investigators said Shoap admitted to setting fire to her third floor apartment, located at 15821 McMullen Highway. Volunteer firefighters from Allegany County, MD and Mineral County, WV., quickly extinguished the blaze.
