BUILDING DAMAGED IN FROSTBURG FIRE
Frostburg Fire Department quickly controlled a fire in a two-story building at 105-107 East Main Street shortly before Noon today.
Flames were first discovered in the basement of the old Duchess Restaurant, which now houses a pool room on the first floor and three apartments on the second floor.

John Preston, who owns the structure and operates the pool room first smelled smoke about 10:45am. He opened the cellar door and smoke and flames poured out. Residents of the apartments were evacuated as the fire spread up the back of the building to the roof.

Length of Service Anniversary

Please help us congratulate M. Douglas Hanson on his "Length of Service" anniversary. Doug joined this great organization on June 26, 1979 and throughout the years, he has provided dedicated service and leadership as both an administrative and fire line officer.

When we post these anniversary announcements, we always mention “the member has performed hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands of man hours of training and service in an effort to continue the rich traditions of the FFD.” In this case, we can’t begin to imagine the hours that Doug has served this department. He has tens of thousands of hours in “fire prevention” alone in the ‘80’s & ‘90’s and continues the same trend today.

Doug moved back to Frostburg last year after retiring as a Battalion Chief from the

ON THIS DAY IN FROSTBURG/FFD HISTORY

Reprinted from The Evening Times, Cumberland, MD - Saturday, June 3, 1911

(Spelling and grammar left as printed)

Eckhart. Md. The shrill shriek of whistles at about 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon aroused the people to turn out and fight fire. The oil house at Mine No. 4 of the Consolidation Coal Company containing many barrels of oil, caught fire from sparks from the boilers.

The oil being a very inflammable fluid and as most of the woodwork of the house was well greased, the fire spread quickly.
As soon as it was recognized a bucket brigade was organized, which did good work. In the meantime connections with the C. & P. R. R. shops, hose line was being made. The fire fighters endangered their lives in putting out the fire, as the
